Your parent is not answering the phone
Usually it is a flat battery, a phone left in the car or a long bath. Sometimes it is not. These steps go from the likely to the serious, so you are not calling the police over a nap, and not waiting all day if something is wrong.
Updated
In the first half hour
- Call again in ten minutes and send a text. A phone on silent still shows a text.
- Try any other number she has: the landline, the mobile, a partner's phone.
- Think about her day. Is it the hair appointment, church, the morning a friend drives her to the store?
Ask somebody close by to look
Call the neighbor, friend or building manager who has a key. Ask them to knock, and to look for lights, the car, mail or newspapers left on the step. If they can, ask them to let themselves in and call you from inside.
If nobody near her has a key, that is the first thing to fix once this is over.
Ask the police for a welfare check
If nobody nearby can go and you still cannot reach her, call the police department or the sheriff's office for the town where she lives and ask for a welfare check. Some places call it a wellness check. An officer goes to the address and knocks. Use their non-emergency number unless you believe she is in danger right now.
If you live in another state, look that number up rather than dialing 911. A 911 call goes to the dispatch center where you are, not where she is.
Have this ready before you call:
- Her full name, address and age.
- Any health conditions and the medicines she takes.
- What she looks like, and her car if she drives.
- Whether there is a spare key or a lockbox, and where.
- Your own phone number, so they can call you back.
When not to wait
If she called you sounding confused, short of breath or in pain and then went quiet, or if somebody at the house can see her on the floor, do not work through the list. Call 911 if you are near her. If you are far away, call her local police and say it is an emergency.
So the next time is not a guess
Most families who go through this once write the plan down afterwards: who has the key, who is called in which order, and how long to wait. What to put in place when a parent lives alone has the rest of that list.
A daily check-in call means you hear about a missed morning within half an hour, without being the one who rings. With Care, if she does not answer three calls, the people on your list are told one after another until somebody confirms they are dealing with it.
Questions
- What is a welfare check?
- A visit by a police officer or a deputy to make sure somebody is safe, asked for by family or friends who cannot reach them. You ask for one through the police or sheriff for the town where the person lives.
- Can I ask for a welfare check from another state?
- Yes. Call the police or sheriff's non-emergency number for her town. Dialing 911 where you are connects you to your own local dispatch, not hers.
- How long should I wait before asking for one?
- There is no fixed rule. If she is usually easy to reach, nobody nearby can go, and an hour or two of trying has got you nowhere, it is reasonable to ask.
