What the money buys
The price follows a handful of things, and it is worth knowing which ones you need before you compare numbers.
- Who makes the call. A person costs more than an automated call. CareCheckers' live calls start where most automated services stop.
- What happens on a missed call. Some services text one contact once. Others ring again, try several people in order, or ask somebody to go to the door.
- Whether anyone can be sent. Only the free sheriff and police programs, and paid dispatch plans such as Snug's, send a person or ask for a wellness check. Care does not.
- What she has to do. Tap an app every day, press a button when something is wrong, or just answer her phone.
- Equipment. Pendants come with a device, and some charge for it. Bay Alarm lists a device fee on its fall detection plan; Medical Guardian prices the Guardian Flex device separately from the monthly fee.
What Care costs, and what is in it
Care is $29 a month for one person. That covers up to three calls a day at the times you set, up to three people told if she does not answer, up to three questions of your own, and a weekly note. The family plan is $59 a month for up to three people, with up to six people to tell.
There is no device and nothing to install. No contract: you can pause or cancel in your console. The first month is refunded if you ask within 30 days, and you can hear the call on your own phone for free before paying anything.
Start by checking what is free
Before paying anyone, find out whether her county already rings older residents. Many sheriff's offices, police departments and Area Agencies on Aging do, at no cost. How to find one, and the programs we could confirm, state by state.
A free program is the better deal when it covers her town and calls every day at a time that suits her. A paid call makes more sense when there is no program near her, when the local one only runs on weekdays, or when you want to hear what she said, not only that she picked up.
Questions
- How much does a daily check-in call service cost?
- Automated services we found ranged from $9.99 to $14.99 a month, Care is $29 a month, and a live caller started at $29.95 a month. Many counties run a free one.
- Are there free daily check-in calls for seniors?
- Yes, in many counties. Sheriff's offices, police departments and Area Agencies on Aging run them. The Eldercare Locator at 1-800-677-1116 can tell you what exists near her.
- Is a check-in call cheaper than a medical alert system?
- Usually. The pendants we priced started at $27.95 a month before any device fee. They do a different job though: a pendant waits for her to press it, a call notices when she does not answer.
- Does Care need a contract or a device?
- No. It is billed by the month, there is nothing to install, and any phone that rings works.
